2000 polls show most people opposed to abortion. Here are the results
A June 2000 Los Angeles Times poll showed that opposition to the Supreme Court’s; 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion decision has grown from a low point of 28 percent opposing Roe in September 1991 to 42 percent opposing Roe in June 2000.
During the same nine years, support for Roe has plummeted from a high of 56 percent in 1991 to 43 percent in 2000, a precipitous drop of almost one-fourth in less than a decade.
But growing opposition to Roe in general does not tell the whole story. When people are asked more specific questions about when abortion should not be legal, polls reveal that Roe is even more at odds with the wishes of the public.
Under Roe, abortion is legal for any reason throughout pregnancy. But a May 2000 Wirthlin Worldwide poll shows that only 8 percent support that position. A combined total of 63 percent want abortion illegal in all circumstances or legal in only a few circumstances.
